Inez Strickland Howard Palmer passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Kerrville, Texas. She was born in Trinity, Texas on July 26, 1915 to Zella Mae Glasco Strickland and James Benjamin Strickland. Her growing up years were spent in and around Montgomery County, Texas.

Inez married Archie Thomas Howard in June 1931. They lived in Conroe, Texas and had two children, Thomas Ray and Barbara Ann. Archie died in 1936. Inez worked as a nurse in Conroe after his death.

In 1939, she married John Wallace Palmer, originally from Wagoner, Oklahoma. They had two daughters, Winifred Pauline and Mary Inez.

John and Inez were founding members of the First Presbyterian Church in Conroe. Inez volunteered in the children's schools as Room Mother, P.T.A. and wherever support was needed.

In 1942, she and three friends started a lending library in Carter's Drug Store in Conroe. That eventually became the Montgomery County Library.

Inez became very interested in genealogy and tracing her family lineage. She found that her family was one of the first families of Texas.

In January 1973, John and Inez moved from Conroe to Kerrville because of John's health. Inez became active with the Hill Country Youth Ranch, First Presbyterian Church, and was a founding member of CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry). She worked with CAM until the late 1980's and continued working with the Hill Country Youth Ranch until she lost her vision. She has continued to be a member of the auxiliary.

John died in 1975. Inez continued living in Kerrville which she loved. She continued her activities and many friendships.

Inez was very attentive to her siblings. She was the last surviving member of her eight brothers and sisters.

In 1981, she and her sister, Lucille Perkins, published a book, Looking Over My Shoulder about their family and their growing up. In 1994, she published Fortune or Fantasy about a trial between Humble Oil Company (now Exxon) and the Strickland heirs. She published Branches and Twigs about her family lineage.

Inez was a wonderful, caring and loving daughter, sister, Mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, friend and Christian.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie; husband, John; parents, Ben and Zella; sisters, Bessie, Dura, Duma, Elma, Lucille and Catherine; brothers, Jay and Ben; son, Tommy; son in law, Don McLean; and grandson, Jimmy Forbes.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara Ann Forbes, Winifred Pauline Weisinger (Bill), Mary McLean; daughter in law, Janie Howard; grandchildren, Scott Howard (Kathy), Tina Howard Jones (Mike), Laura Forbes Helms Glass (Peter), Debbie Weisinger Westmiller (Gerard), John Weisinger (Jill), Jennifer McLean Lechman (Chad) and Jason McLean (Nilsa); great grandchildren, Ammie Ballinger, Dee Ann Kelly (Rob), Tracy Howard Yanchak (Michael), Bo Jones (Sara), Colt Jones (Kaili), Christina Helms, Laci Hale (John), Scott Helms, Jake Weisinger, Josh Weisinger, Bryce Lechman, Hannah Lechman and Colleen McLean; many great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Inez's life will be held on March 1, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Kerrville with Reverend Rob Lohmeyer officiating. A reception will follow in Ryan Hall.
