James Robert Irby passed away on November 5, 2012. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas to Joseph and Winifred Irby on October 27, 1931.

Jim graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1947 and then served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. When the Korean War began in 1950, he was activated and fought at the Chosen Reservoir where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

Jim was released from active duty after serving four years as a Staff Sergeant. During his service he was also awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy/Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation with one star, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two stars, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Ribbon, and the Republic of Korea Service Medal.

After his service, Jim worked for Straus-Frank Company, U.S. Rubber, Michelin Tire Co. and owned Harry Allen Tire Co. and American Tire & Automotive in the Houston/Spring area.

As an avid golfer, Jim lived in The Woodlands for many years and was a charter member of The Woodlands Country Club. Upon his retirement, he moved to Montgomery and enjoyed boating on Lake Conroe. Jim was a member of the Marine Corps League in Conroe serving as a Jr. Vice Commandant, Bingo Coordinator for many years, and was voted MCL Eastex Detachment Marine of the Year.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jerry Irby and his daughter, Rhonda Irby. Jim is survived by his wife, Connie, sister, Winifred Davis of Austin, brother Joe Irby, Jr. of Pasadena, sons, James Irby, Jr. of Houston and William Irby of Ruston, LA, daughter, DeAnn Irby of Houston, three nieces, three nephews, two grandchildren, two stepsons and one stepdaughter.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Houston National Cemetery chapel at 10:00 a.m. on November 26, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jim's name to the Wounded Warriors Project or the Cardio-Pulmonary Lung Disease Association.
