(nee Burgess) On June 27, 2014, wife of the late Gilbert H.; Beloved mother of Gale Griese Butcher (Bill) of Brewster, MA, Douglas S. (Lorraine) of Washington Twp., NJ, Kevin B. (Merri) of Haddon Twp., NJ, Laurie Griese Dysart (Mike) of Charleston, SC and the late Philip W.; Loving mother-in-law of Pam Griese of Birmingham, AL; Cherished grandmother of 13 and Dear sister of Leila Nutzel Williams.
Claire grew up near the Essex County House of Detention for Women, where her father was the Superintendent. She graduated from Syracuse Univ. in 1940 and did graduate studies at NY Univ. & Montclair State Univ. She was a member of the 1st Training Program in the Marine Corps for Women Reserves (MCWR). Claire married Gilbert, fellow Syracuse graduate, in 1941. She was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in 1943 and her first assignment was Battalion Commander, MCWR recruit Training Camp in LeJune, NC. Her second assignment was Asst. to the Commanding Officer, Parris Island Air Station, SC and her third assignment was CO Headquarters Squadron Cherry Point Air Base, NC where she received the rank of Captain. Upon Gilbert's return from his overseas deployment with the US Army, she resigned her commission. She received a letter of Commendation from the Commandant of the US Marine Corps for her service. In 1955, Claire & Gilbert moved to Haddonfield, where she lived for the next 39 years. In 1962, Claire began a 30 year career at the Bancroft School of Haddonfield. She was Director of Rehabilitation and Clinical Services and in 1963 The N.J. State Rehabilitation Association honored her as "Rehabilitation Counselor of the Year." Claire was also an active member of Moorestown Rotary, the Tavistock Country Club, Haddonfield D.A.R., the NJ Association of Mayflower Descendants and the William Bradford Compact.
Claire's family will receive friends on Wed. July 2nd, 9:30-10:30 AM, at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield, NJ. All are invited to her Funeral Mass, 11 AM Wed. July 2nd at Christ the King RC Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield, NJ. Interment, Calvary Cem. Cherry Hill, NJ.
