William Lavender, Sr.

AGE: 90 • Maple Shade

William Lavender Sr. passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24th at Cooper University Hospital in Camden of complications from heart surgery. Bill was born in Philadelphia on July 31, 1922. He was 90. Bill graduated from and played football at North Catholic H.S. in Phila. He participated in Officers training while playing football at Princeton University. Bill served in the United States Marine Corp. from August 1942 through Nov. 1945 attaining the rank of corporal. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Area, participating in action at Saipan, Tinian, and Roi-Namur. He was awarded a Presidential Unit citation W/1 Star and The Bronze Star. He worked as a salesman for Samuel Gross for over 30 years. He was a long time resident of Maple Shade, a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, and an original member of VFW Post 2445 in Maple Shade. He was an avid reader and a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Gertrude (Schroeck) and six children: William and wife Theresa (Vento), Thomas and wife Renee (Nessen), Richard and wife Janis (Horner), Chris and wife Kathleen (Kressler), Teresa Klaw and husband Wayne, Susan Marshall and husband Paul. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 236 E. Main St. Maple Shade NJ 08052 at 10:00 a.m. on May 18, 2013. Donations may be made to PO Box 50 Memphis TN 38101-9929. Family service by Inglesby/Givnish of Maple Shade 856-779-7900.
