Giovanni Massaglia, "Gio", passed away peacefully on April 27, 2013 at the Thomas Jefferson Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. He was born and raised in Brozolo, Italy. Gio had a love of cooking from when he was a young man and had worked aboard cruise lines in food hospitality. In 1973 he met and married the love of his life, Susan and moved to the United States; after several years of working for others, he opened his own restaurant in Philadelphia," La Grolla". He had been a resident of Haddon Heights, NJ until recently when they moved to Mullica Hill, NJ. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips to Maine, which was reflected in the specialty dinners at his restaurant; that included "Lobster nights", as well as a yearly "18 course game dinner" which was well renowned. He had "hands of gold" and enjoyed creating inlaid works of art with wood; he also enjoyed gardening and playing Bocce on his homemade court.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carlo and Lamberta Massaglia. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Susan (nee Balog), his loving son James and his wife Amy. He is also survived by his siblings Gabriella Coscia and Joseph Massaglia of the United States; and a brother and sister living in Italy, as well as his furry companions Sous Chef and the Kitties.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather Saturday, May 11 at 11am at the Alloway & Donnelly Funeral Home, 523-25 Cumberland St. Gloucester City, NJ. Religious services will begin at noon with a period of remembrance, all are invited to participate. Int. Private. Family requests memorial donations in his name be made to: Food for the Poor.
