James Vatis

AGE: 92 years • Turnersville

James Vatis, aged 92 years of Turnersville, peacefully passed away on April 25, 2014 with his loving family by his side.

A quiet, hardworking man who loved his family is the legacy that Jim leaves behind.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Jim served in the United States Army during World War II as a Technician 5th grade. On his 23rd birthday, D-Day, Jim was among the soldiers that stormed Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the EAME Theater Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars. Following his time in the Army, Jim returned home, met, fell in love with and married a young woman by the name of Freda Hagel. They shared 53 years of marriage and raised a son, David that completed their family.

Jim worked as a Sheet Metal Worker at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard for twenty years until his retirement in 1983. Away from his work, Jim enjoyed doing puzzles with Freda, collecting stamps, coins and had an extensive beer can collection. He enjoyed going to Antique Car Shows and collecting Car Brochures. Most of all, Jim enjoyed the time spent with his family creating memories that they will cherish as his legacy.

Jim is the beloved husband of Freda (nee Hagel); loving father of David (Sharon) Vatis; dear brother of Konel Captis and Anna Jordan; grandfather of 6 and great grandfather of 14
