Richard M. Smith, on June 22, 2013, of Blackwood, formerly of Pennsylvania. Age 75. Mr. Smith was a graduate of West Chester University, PA and pursued graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia where he studied choral conducting with Robert Page. For thirty-five years Mr. Smith held the position of Director of Choral Activities at Audubon High School, Audubon, NJ. Mr. Smith designed and taught one of the first high school programs in Electronic Music. The Audubon High School Concert Choirs appeared on numerous occasions with the Haddonfield (NJ) Symphony Orchestra. During summers of 1964, 1970, 1975 and 1980, his Concert Choir performed throughout Europe. Mr. Smith was appointed Conductor of the 1970 and 1979 New Jersey All-State Chorus and conducted the All-South Jersey Senior High Chorus in 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998. Mr. Smith has been active in many phases of New Jersey music, organizations having been a past President of the South Jersey Choral Directors' Association and Manager of the 1966 and 1967 NJ All-State Chorus. Mr. Smith was a member of the Board of Directors of the South Jersey Choral Directors Association where he served as Treasurer for the past 32 years. Mr. Smith has also been a member of the Board of Directors' of the New Jersey Music Educators Association where he served as Chairman of the Committee on Choral Procedures. In 1992, Mr. Smith was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award from the New Jersey Music Educators Association. In 1995 he was awarded the New Jersey Governor's Award for Distinguished Leadership in Music Education. In 1999, Mr. Smith was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Awarded from his alma mater, West Chester University. He is a member of the New Jersey Retired Educators' Association. Richard is survived by several close friends: Judy Perkins, Jack Rowland, Andrew Seigel, Colleen and Robert Snodgrass, and Duane Trowbridge. Service and interment are private.
