Anthony Gerald Furgione Obituary
Anthony Gerald Furgione

AGE: 93 • Chesilhurst

Anthony Gerald Furgione, 93, of Chesilhurst, passed peacefully on April 5, 2014 at home. Anthony was a member of the "greatest generation". Born in Rosedale NJ, he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football at Hammonton High School and was president of the class of '39. He honorably served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as an aircraft radio technician. Prior to his deployment to Europe, Anthony married his high school sweetheart, Esther Hunter of Chesilhurst, a marriage that would last 68 years until the passing of Esther in 2011. Upon his return from the war, he worked for the New York Shipyard, Camden and the Budd Company, Philadelphia where he retired as a shop steward and proud member of the UAW.

Anthony dutifully served as mayor of the Borough of Chesilhurst for 17 years. He was a member and past president of the Camden County Mayors Association and a member of the Atco Methodist Church where he served in several leadership positions. A sportsman and outdoorsman, Anthony was a member of the Alpha Gun Club, the Chesilhurst Volunteer Fire Company and the NJ Forest Fire Service. He also enjoyed the area senior citizen organizations to which he belonged and the trips and card games that ensued.

Anthony is predeceased by his devoted wife, Esther (Hunter), his dear parents, Charles and Mary Furgione, his siblings, John, Joseph, Charles "Fudgie", Robert, Mary Lou (Wigginton) and precious granddaughter, Nicole Mary. He is survived by his children Gerald (Barbara) of Cedar Brook, Robert (Betty) of Chesilhurst who lovingly cared for him until his death, and June Batz (Ray) of Cape May Court House as well as his sisters Alice Bastien (Warren) and Helen Capri. Also surviving him are his grandchildren Leigh, Matt, Kristin, Gerald Jr, Lori, Ryan, and William; and great grandchildren Jack Hunter, Nola Mae, Maria, Lexi, Meagan, Bronx, Reagan, Rory, Vincent, and Riley. He was looking forward to the arrival of his first great great grandchild.

Anthony was a man of faith and touched the lives of all with whom he interacted. During his life he served his God, his Country, his Family and his Community. He now joins his loving wife in heaven for their eternal reunion.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the Atco United Methodist Church, 2128 Atco Ave., Atco, NJ, 08004 followed by Funeral Services at 11:00 AM.
