Howard Shrode Obituary

Howard Thomas Shrode
Chrisney, Ind.
Howard Thomas "Tom" Shrode, 83, of Columbus, Ind., formerly of Chrisney, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014.
Tom was the son of the late Chester and Pansy (Vance) Shrode of Spencer County, Ind. He graduated from Rockport High School in 1948 and married Mary Berniece ("Bea") Dawson in 1949.
Tom was a civil servant for the USDA Soil Conservation Service during which time the family lived in Indianapolis, Madison, Wisc., and Athens, Ga. Tom earned a B.A. in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University in 1975. After retiring from government service in 1986, Tom and Bea built a home in Chrisney, Ind., and spent many wonderful years in retirement. Tom was active in Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, York Rite and the Knights Templar.
When not shopping for antique tractors, rebuilding farm equipment, machining his own tools and parts, clearing timber, or serving on one of the church boards, Tom could usually be found honing his skills as a competitive skeet shooter.
Tom was an avid reader, particularly of military history. He fed his wanderlust by sharing travel adventures with Bea to Columbia, Australia, Tahiti, Israel, Greece, Turkey, the Caribbean and many places in the U.S. Tom fulfilled a lifelong dream by taking flying lessons and receiving his pilot's license in 2011.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Chester Allen. His loving wife of 60 years, Bea Shrode, passed away in 2009.
He is survived by sisters, Hallie Jean Ayer, Chrisney, Ind., and Mary Ann Horn, Owensboro, Ky.; son, Paul Shrode, Tyler, Texas; daughter, Karen Shrode, Columbus, Ind.; grandchildren, Samantha (Rick), Josh (Katie), Sierra, Jenelle, Matthew; great-granddaughter, Avery, and many nieces and nephews.
His intellect, wit, generosity and spirit of adventure will be missed.
Services 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Boultinghouse Funeral Home, 527 Main Street, Rockport, Ind., 47635 with Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Burial is at Grandview Cemetery. A masonic service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone United Methodist Church or the Spencer County Community Foundation.

I am Tom's cousin, Marilyn Shrode Wall. My father Harry and his father Chester were brothers. It was a special treat to reconnect with Tom these last few years on social media. The Shrode family has lost a dear man.
