Marjorie Shelley Obituary

Dr. Marjorie Shelley
Evansville, Ind.
Dr. Marjorie Shelley, 88, of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Evansville, died June 28, 2013. Marge was born in Evansville, the daughter of Leroy and Mabel Shelley, on September 10, 1924. She graduated from Bosse High School and Evansville College and then taught school at Bosse for a year. Marge then enrolled at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wheaton, Illinois, where she received her degree in Christian Education. In 1948 she was assigned as a missionary by the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society to Katwa, Butembo in the Belgian Congo, where she taught at an orphanage for mulatto girls. While home on furlough, the Mau Mau became active in Congo and she was not allowed to return because it was too dangerous. She then earned a Master's Degree in Journalism at Syracuse University. After this she went to France for a year of language study and then was sent to the French-speaking Ivory Coast where she remained as a missionary until her retirement in 1989. In the Ivory Coast she went first to Korhogo and then to Abidjan, where she was Director of Christian Evangelical Publications.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Dr. Bruce Shelley of Denver. She is survived by a brother, Stephen Shelley of Evansville; her sister-in-law, Mary Shelley, 5 nieces and nephews and their offspring and her missionary companion, Alice Sturz all of Denver.
Services were held at Galilee Baptist Church and arrangements were handled by the Advantage Aurora Chase Chapel in Aurora, Colorado.
