Ronald Clair Roat
Evansville, Ind.
Ronald Clair Roat, 67, died Thursday November 28 at his home in Ludington, MI.
He was born April 4, 1946 in Pontiac, MI, son of Harold and Margaret (Colby) Roat. Ron attended Ludington High School and graduated with the class of 1964. He then attended Michigan State University where he graduated with his bachelor's degree in journalism. Ron also earned his master of arts in interdisciplinary studies from Oregon State University.He enlisted in the United States Army on December 11, 1968, serving until his honorable discharge on September 12, 1970 to attend graduate school. Ron's career included work as the consumer advocate for the city of Dayton, OH and working as a reporter, columnist, and/or managing editor for six newspapers in Michigan, West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana, including the Lansing State Journal, Dayton Daily News, and the Frankfort Times. He finished his career starting in 1986 as associate professor of journalism at the University of Southern Indiana, retiring to Michigan in 2007. He was a published novelist, writing three mystery novels featuring Lansing-based private investigator Stuart Mallory. He was also a pilot, after a lifelong love of aviation.
Ron is survived by his daughter, Brittany (Christopher) Evans of Cadiz, KY; mother, Margaret Roat of Ludington, MI; two sisters, Dianne (Wally) Brown of Ludington, MI and Kay (Mike) Lubert of Grand Blanc, MI; brother, David (Shirley) of Greeley, CO; grandson, Coleman Evans of Cadiz, KY; and granddaughter, Lonna Evans of Doniphan, MO.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold; and son, Colby.
Cremation has taken place and no service is planned at this time. Memorial contributions in memory of Ron may be directed to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (http://www.nationalmssociety.org).
