David S. Griggs
David S. Griggs, 82, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013, surrounded by his family at home.
David was born in Dayton, Ohio, on September 20, 1930 to the late Dewitt Gilbert and Edith M. (Sanders) Griggs. He graduated from Bosse High School, the University of Evansville and received his Masters Degree from Indiana University
. David was a United States Army
Veteran, who served during the Korean War
. He retired from the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation as a history teacher and counselor at Helfrich Park Middle School formerly called Centenial Grade School, after 27 years of service. David was a charter member of East Side Baptist Church and was currently a member of American Baptist East Church. He was a longtime member of the The Heart Group Rehabilitation Center. He loved spending time with his family and especially loved being the father of twin boys. Some of his favorite things David always heard were "Hi DaDa! I love you DaDa!" and "Mr. Griggs, you were my favorite teacher! Do you remember me?" His life centered around God, love, church, children and his wife, Ellen.
David is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen (Serey) Griggs; son, Jeffrey Alan (Dr. Rosanne) Griggs of Lafayette, IN; step-daughter, Freddie Ann (Tim) Loehrlein of Evansville, IN; sisters, Edith Mildred McLimore of Columbus, OH, Rose Mary Williams and Anne Peterman both of Evansville, IN; sister-in-law, Sharon Ann (Dr. W.A.) Rosso of Central City, KY; grandchildren, Ashley (Brandon) Hallman, Timothy (Shannon) Loehrlein, Samantha (Hector) Loehrlein, Katie (Christopher) Johnson and Robert Griggs; great-grandchildren, Harmonie, Nathan, Gavin David, and Aiden Hallman and Kolben Johnson. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Bettye Jeanne (Haberberger) Griggs in 1980, son, David Andrew Griggs, stepson, Teddy Bradford Sparks, brothers, Dewitt G. Griggs Jr. and Arthur R. Griggs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 5, 2013 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, with Rev. Peck Axton and Sister Jane Nesmith officiating. Burial will be held at Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Browning Funeral Home and from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Apostle, which serves the poor in the city, 617 Bellemeade Avenue, Evansville, IN 47713.
