Donald R. "Vandy" Vandever, age 77, of Evansville, passed away Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehab Center.
Mr. Vandever was employed at Whirlpool for 41 years before his retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the R-Men's Club and Big Blue Boosters at Reitz High School and an active volunteer with the Westside Improvement Association. He was a 1953, graduate of FJ Reitz High School, where he earned All-City, All-State and All-American honors while playing on the football team. Vandy served his country as a veteran of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Surviving Vandy are his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Marsch) Vandever; a daughter, Andrea (Wade) Helmer, of Evansville; son, Raymond B. Vandever, of Calhoun, Ky.; two grandchildren, Reed and Rylie Helmer; and two brothers, Keith Vandever, of Newburgh, and Virgil G. Vandever, of Owensboro, Ky.
Vandy was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil V. and Mildred (Grigsby) Vandever; and an infant daughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Pierre Funeral Home, Rev. David Nunning officiating. Entombment will follow in Oak Hill Mausoleum, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit with the family from 2 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street.
