Herbert D. Compton, 92, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away Monday, January 6, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana.
He was born the son of Clarence W. and Viola (Snyder) Compton on Wednesday, April 13, 1921 in Stewartsville, Indiana. Herb was married to Betty Lou Johnson Pierson on April 8, 1967 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Herb served our country during World War II
in the Army/Air Corp. Herb retired as a machinist at Snap-On Tools in Mt. Carmel. He also was a member of the Mt. Carmel VFW
and American Legion.
Herb is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Steve (Margaret) Compton of Vincennes, Indiana, Scott (Marilyn) Compton of Johnson City, Tennessee, and daughters, Lee Ann (Kevin) Macy of Tampa, Florida, Sandra (Jerry) Heflin of Rockwall, Texas, Pamela Treni of Dallas, Texas and Sally Wilkerson of Evansville, Indiana; his brothers, Aaron Compton of Evansville, Indiana, Max Compton of Onekama, Michigan, Jack Compton of Griffin, Indiana, and a sister, Farrol Bratton of Poseyville, Indiana. Herb was blessed with many grandchildren, Keesha (Chad) Peterson, Christy (Doug) McPherson, Ashley (Bruce) Burns, Erin (Rusty) Dale, Brett Heflin, Derrick (Lauren) Compton, Drew Compton, David Compton, Ryan Cannon, Jackie Slatter, Scott Wilkerson, Sean Macy, Taylor Miller, Jordan (Tabby) Miller, Katelyn (Dave) East, Arron Wilkerson and Jerod Wilkerson; and great-grandchildren, Ethan Peterson, Brayden Peterson, Trevor Peterson, Allie McPherson, Clayton Dale, Ryder Elms, Bruce Burns, Jr., Kaitlynn Jones-Cannon, Emily Jones-Cannon , Carys Cannon,
Aiden East, Brian East and Noah Miller.
Preceding him in death were his parents, first wife, Virginia L. Coleman, brothers, Lloyd Compton and Gail Compton, a sister, Genevieve Frederick and a grandson, Jared Cannon.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014 in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014 also in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home. Burial Services will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
