Col. Jackie F. Johnson, 81, passed away of natural causes at his home in Newburgh, Indiana, on Friday, July 11, 2014.
He was born on July 10, 1933, to Fred L. Johnson and Geneva Rainbolt Johnson. He graduated from Bosse High School in 1953, where he was an All-State football player and a member of a State Championship relay team on the track. He received a football and track scholarship to Western Kentucky University and was a proud Hilltopper alumnus. He married his High School sweet heart Jane Dreher in 1957.
After graduating from Western in 1957, he received a commission in the U.S. Army. During his 30 years of service, he received the following medals: Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
He attended the Army War College in 1968, and was assigned to the Pentagon Logistics Service, and later was a Battalion Commander at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He was also was an Advisor to the Louisiana National Guard, Director of Personnel at the Military Traffic Command at Bayone, New Jersey. His last assignment was as an Inspector General for the Department of Defense Inspector General where he headed a team that inspected military installations world-wide.
Jackie is survived by his wife, Jane Johnson; his children, Jack G. Johnson, Janet Satterfield and Jeanine Williams; his grandchildren, David Hollander, Travis Satterfield, Daniel Hollander, Hayley Williams, Nicholas Williams and Rebecca Williams; and great-grandson, Warren Hollander. He is also survived by his sisters, Pat Wilhite and Joyce Arrigo; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Debbie Greenhaw; and daughter, Janel Johnson.
The family will receive friends on Monday July, 14, 2014, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 1800 Saint George Rd. Evansville Indiana. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday July, 15, 2014, at the same location.
