Jean Benedict

Jean Leah (Gabel) Benedict
Evansville, Ind.
On May 9, 2014, the Lord called Jean Leah Benedict home. She was a committed Christian and a life-long member of St John's United Church of Christ. Born in Evansville, Indiana, on October 14, 1920, she was the only child of George and Flora (Goetze) Gabel of Evansville, Indiana. She attended Fulton Elementary School and the old downtown Central High School, graduating in 1938. During her senior year she volunteered to work in the then-new Mechanics' Arts facility, which later became the former North High School. After graduating she was hired as the first paid secretary there.
In 1943 she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1943 to 1945 as a Secretary in the Fleet Marine Force Office in Honolulu. During her military service she was stationed in Hawaii and the South Pacific theater of operations, where she met her future husband, Keith Joyce Benedict. After returning to Evansville they were married on July 14, 1946.
As the mother of two children, she enjoyed sewing and cooking and being a homemaker. She was also very active in her church, participating in a number of volunteer activities such as working in the nursery, helping with church suppers, and putting up holiday decorations. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Job's Daughters.
She worked for nine years for the Department of Agriculture, giving commodity reports on the radio for the Evansville Stockyard. She was an avid fan of several sports. She especially enjoyed bowling and following Cubs Baseball and Colts Football. She loved to travel, camp and spend extended periods in Florida during the winter season. Jean was a loving, wonderful woman and will be deeply missed.
Jean is survived by her husband, Keith J. Benedict of Evansville; son, Keith G. (Nan) Benedict of Evansville; grandchildren, Jeffery Richard Hightower, Jennifer Elaine Hightower, Jessica Emily (Joshua Willhite) Hightower and Alekzandr (Beth) Martin; and son-in-law, James R.
