Melvin Joseph Wannemuehler
Melvin Joseph Wannemuehler, 86, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Mel was born in Evansville, Indiana on August 9, 1927 to the late Henry and Mathilda (Wildeman) Wannemuehler. He was a 1945 graduate of Memorial High School then immediately went on to serve in the United States Navy
during World War II
. Mel started working with computers while in the Navy and then continued his education at Evansville College. He continued his work with computer technology by being the area's first Data Processing Manager Society President and led the computer departments at Kent Plastics and SIGECO where he retired in 1992. He and many others were instrumental in starting High School soccer programs in Evansville. Mel was the first coach of Evansville's North High School Soccer Team and also coached McCutchanville Little League for many years. Mel was a dedicated volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul where he served as Treasurer. He loved spending time with his family especially attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Mel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances (Martin) Wannemuehler of Evansville, IN; sons, Mike (Yvonne) of Ames, IA, Steve (Kathy) of Newburgh, IN, Kevin (Jo Ann) of St. Charles, MO, Scott of Evansville, IN, Brian (Diane) of Evansville, IN, Jon (Beth Anne) of Charlotte, NC; sister, Mary Joan (Bill) Knapp of Evansville, IN; sister-in-law, Liz Wannemuehler; grandchildren, Michelle (C.J.) Hermann, Ashley (Josh) Gibson, Jessica, Amy, Lindsey, Bradley, Travis, Matthew, Shelby and Sam Wannemuehler; step grandchildren, Krista Spaetti, Katie Dunn; great grandchildren, Joshua and Anna Marie Gibson; many nieces and nephews.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Loretta (Dick) Weinzapfel; brothers, Cletus (Margaret) and Ronald Wannemuehler.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday, July 7, 2014 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 North Stockwell Road, Evansville, IN 47715 with Father Zack Etienne celebrating. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711 and again from 9:00 AM until mass time on Monday at the church.
