William W. Arend, Sr.
William Wayne Arend, Sr. passed away at St. Mary's Medical Center on Sunday, December, 23, 2012. He was born in Evansville on February 14, 1934 and was a life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Altheide Arend, parents John and Evelyn Sandefur Arend, aunt and uncle, Hilda and Carl Witte and grandmother Otillie Arend.
He leaves behind his wife of 14 years, Patricia (Peck) Arend. Bill was the proud father of Amy Feitl (Rick) and Wayne Arend (Lara); step children Pamela Schlachter, Chris Wathen (Jane), Dennis Wathen (Pam); grandchildren Emily (fiance' Joel Blackstock), Andrew and Ellie Feitl; step grand children, Samuel and Tyler Schlachter, Amanda "AJ" and Clay Wathen, Jessica Elliott (Josh), Michael Wathen (fiancé, Megan Moore), Megan and Nick Wathen and Savannah Halseth; and step-great-grandchildren, Annie and Malaya Elliott .
Bill achieved the rank of specialist in the United States Army and served for two years in the Army Signal Corps in France.
He attended and graduated from the banking program at the University of Wisconsin and was a longtime employee of National City Bank. He retired in 1994 after more than 40 years of service. He began his career there as a coin boy and rose to the position of Vice President and branch manager of the Michigan and Main and Lawndale branches. Following his retirement, he relocated with his son, Wayne, to Orange Beach, Alabama for several years to operate the Bear Point Marina and Restaurant.
Bill attended St. Paul's Lutheran School. As a graduate of Bosse High school, he was a member of their championship football team of 1951. Among his many interests, he enjoyed being active in Junior Achievement, playing league softball, supporting University of Evansville and Indiana University
sports and showed his pride in his children's and grandchildrens' attendance at these Universities. Bill served as President of Caze Elementary School PTA, the only two time President and President Emeritus of the Evansville Freedom Festival , president of the Evansville ARC in the late 1970's and past president of the Northside Businessmen's Association.
His greatest joy arose from his family. Bill embodied the spirit of Christmas by playing Santa Claus for his children, grandchildren and others for over 40 years. He enjoyed sharing his Christmas spirit with others through his display of Christmas decorations and open houses. The most special room in his home was his year-round Christmas room, full of Christmas houses and his beloved Santa Clauses.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Thursday, December 27, 2012 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 100 E. Michigan St., Evansville with Pastor Robert Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be at 2 m-7 pm, Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Boone Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville and from 10 am until service time, Thursday, at the church.
