Betty Lou (Ingersoll) Hughes
The Guest Book is expired.
Betty Lou (Ingersoll) Hughes, 90, of Evansville, Indiana, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Ill., and Clearwater, Fla., passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Jan. 17, 2013, at Deaconess Hospice Care Center in Evansville. Betty was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Princeton, Ind., to the late Jesse Grant Sr. and Flora Nell (Dixon) Ingersoll.
Betty married her soul mate Bobbie Howard Hughes, her husband of 60 years, in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1943. They made Mt. Carmel their home for many years. She was a dedicated member of Beta Sigma Phi, Chi Master Chapter and a former recipient of the Order of the Rose. Betty was also a former faithful member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter #32 in Mt. Carmel.
She attended Christian Fellowship Church in Evansville, and previously was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel.
Betty worked 44 years in several careers both in Illinois and Florida before retiring with Bobbie to Evansville, to be closer to family. While also a talented seamstress, cook and gardener, one of Betty's greatest achievements was maintaining a close network of family and friends throughout her 90 years. Betty was happiest when sharing stories, laughs and good times with her family, friends, sorority sisters, and, in her later years, with her friends at Lakeside Manor in Evansville. She is loved by many and will be missed by all.
In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Bobbie, in 2004; her brothers Jesse Jr., and Richard; sisters, Marinell and Marian Jo; and two nephews.
Betty is survived by her sister, Norma (Norman) Stewart, of Forsyth, Ill.; two daughters, Joan Adair (Thomas W.) Rhodes, of Evansville, Ind., and Janet Elaine (Norbert A.) Yellig, of Blairsville, Ind.; four grandchildren, Sabrina Rhodes, of Newburgh, Ind., Erika Rhodes, of Louisville, Ky., Gayle (Cory) Smith, of Cynthiana, Ind., and Staff Sgt. Christopher Yellig (Juliana Zapata), currently serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany; great-grandchildren Noah, Mary, Gabriella, Ashlyn and Elena; four nieces; and three nephews.
Per her wishes, a private funeral service will be held for Betty at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Ziemer Funeral Home in Evansville, and Short Funeral Home in Mt. Carmel are assisting the family with funeral with arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess Hospice Care Center, where Betty received tender, compassionate care in her final days. Also special thanks to Dr. Ward Neff for his sincere attention to Betty through the years.
Condolences may be made to the family online at www.ziemerfuneralhome.com.
