Emmett Owensby Obituary
Emmett C. Owensby
Evansville, IN
Emmett C. Owensby, 95, of Evansville, Indiana, died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.
Emmett was born March 18, 1918, in Jasper, Missouri, to the late Arthur D. and Ressie I. (Taylor) Owensby. He grew up working on the family farm.
After graduating from Southeast Missouri Teachers College, Emmett became the principal of the Pocahontas (Missouri) High School. In 1942 his love of Jesus Christ turned into a call to ministry and he was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister. In 1943, Emmett was united in marriage to Mary A. Newell.
After graduating from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary he served churches in Alabama, Missouri and Indiana.
In Evansville, Emmett served as pastor of the Northeast Park, Gethsemane, Willow Road, Pleasantview and Cornerstone Southern Baptist churches. In addition, he led in worship each Sunday for over 40 years at the Heritage-Holiday Home. He preached over 10,000 sermons, his last sermon being preached the Sunday before his death.
In addition to his work in ministry, Emmett received a Master's Degree from Evansville College in social work and served as a case reviewer for Indiana Department of Public Welfare until 1987.
His family and friends knew of his deep love for God and for them. He wrote each of his grandchildren monthly letters of encouragement and sent "pocket money" for college and post-graduate studies.
Emmett was a man of deep faith, a source of strength and an anchor for all who knew him. There were many who turned to him for his wisdom and advice. Throughout his life he brought many into God's Presence and love. His unwavering trust in God kept him securely placed in the hollow of God's Hand.
Emmett was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2007. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Ann (Joseph) Illingworth, Carolyn (Dale) Roth and Emma Sue (Dennis) Davenport. Nine grandchildren survive, Jimmy (Kristin) Illingworth, Ryan (Ashley) Illingworth, Alexa McIntyre, Eryn (Mark Jefferson) Roth, Brooke Roth, Jessica Roth, Derek (Erin) Davenport, Andrew (Marie) Davenport, and David (Kelsie) Davenport. Also surviving are eleven great grandchildren, two sisters, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11 am, Friday, August 16, 2013 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 5501 Washington Avenue, Evansville with the Reverend Dr. Dennis R. Davenport presiding. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 pm until 7 pm, Thursday, August 15, 2013 Boone Funeral Home-East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
