Jerry L. Whitsell

Jerry L. Whitsell, 80, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013 at Westpark Rehabilitation Center.
Jerry was born in Evansville, Indiana on February 12, 1933 to the late Roy L. and Martine (Ranes) Whitsell. Jerry graduated from Reitz High School in 1951 where he was an outstanding legend on the basketball court. The Reitz High School basketball team in 1951 missed the state championship by one shot. In 1951, Jerry was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's Silver Anniversary Team. Jerry was also named to the All-Sectional team, the All-SIAC team and the All-State team. He was honored by the Evansville Kiwanis Club as Reitz' most valuable player. He was selected to play on the Indiana All-Star team which met the Kentucky All Stars in the annual game at Indianapolis. Jerry continued his education accepting a scholarship to Western Kentucky University where he played basketball under Coach Ed Diddle, on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers team. During Jerry's time at Western Kentucky the team won the Ohio Valley Conference championship for two years. He played in three National Invitational Tournaments. He was selected the most valuable player at WKU in 1955. He played in the Kentucky vs. Indiana college "All-Star" game at the Kentucky State Fair. He served in the United States Army and played in the 4th Army Basketball Team. Jerry received his Master's Degree in education from WKU. Jerry completed his dream by becoming a teacher and assistant basketball coach at Reitz High School where he taught for 38 years. Family was most important in his life and he never met a stranger. Jerry and Diane attended Christian Fellowship Church for 36 years. Jerry was a Kentucky Colonel.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Diane (Denzer) Whitsell of Evansville, IN; daughters, Julie Whitsell of Evansville, IN, Jennifer (Tim) Pressley of Newburgh, IN, Jamie (Jeff) Robb of Evansville, IN; sister, Martha (William) Thurneck, and their family of Charlottesville, VA; grandson, Aiden John Robb; sisters-in-law, Gail Southwood and Susan (Toby) Shaw; brother-in-law, Bill Denzer.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711 with Pastor Cliff Herring officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Browning Funeral Home and from 1:00 PM until service time on Thursday.
