Leroy L. Jochum
Evansville, Ind.
Leroy L. Jochum died April 18, 2013. He was 78, born November 13, 1934, the son of Robert and Ida (Hassfurther) Jochum. Leroy graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1952, and served in the US Army for two years.
Leroy was a hard worker with a keen business-sense. He began work as a reporter for Virgil Case and the Oil Report; for a time at age 19 going in-air on WJPS Sunday evenings at 6 p.m., in the middle of Paul Harvey, reading news from the region's oil fields. Leroy went on to work for Vickery Drilling Company. Later in his career, he became the owner and CEO of Jochum-Vickery Drilling. With Vickery and Jochum-Vickery, Leroy was active in much exploratory work for the Illinois Basin and did extensive structure mapping in northern Illinois, and oil, coal and gas exploration work in Indiana and western Kentucky.
Leroy took joy in sharing his time and treasure. He served on the organizing committee to develop the first Parish Council at Saint Joseph Catholic Church-Vanderburgh Co., and held various leadership offices on the boards of the German Township Water District and the Center for Family Life. Leroy financially supported scores of causes including the Center for Family Life, the Public Education Foundation, the Reitz Home Museum, Evansville Philharmonic and the EPO-Youth Orchestra, Helfrich Park STEM Academy, Reitz Memorial High School, the United Methodist Youth Home, various Native American schools, and Roman Catholic charities internationally and in the Diocese of Evansville.
Leroy was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church-Vanderburgh County. He served on Parish Council and Finance Commission, and had also been a member of the Men's Club, and Haiti Committee.
Leroy was pre-deceased by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn (Long) Jochum in 2009. Leroy was a good, fair and active father to Anna M. (Michael) Ennis, Robert T. Jochum (deceased), and Matthew J. Jochum, and to one stillborn son. In addition to his children, he is survived by his sister, Aline (Allen) Brescher, of Ireland, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Mindy (Lutz/Jochum) Johnson, of Sulphur; two grandchildren, Robert M. and Mary J. Ennis; and numerous nieces and nephews, who all took great care of him, too. He taught his family by living the values of justice, fairness and loyalty.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the USI Foundation for the Leroy L Jochum Memorial Geology Scholarship; the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception, Ferdinand, Ind.; or .
