Sister Martha Marie Tempel, 91, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, died at 5:15 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the monastery.
A native of Siberia, Indiana, Sister Martha Marie was born August 6, 1920, the first of eight children born to William and Rita (Wallis) Tempel. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1939, and made her first profession of vows in 1941 and her final profession in 1944.
She is survived by two brothers, Leander (Lee) of Dale and Hilbert of St. Henry; nieces and nephews; and members of her religious community. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Rita Wallis; and her brothers, Joseph, Otto, Louis, and Edwin.
Sister Martha Marie was a teacher for 42 years. She taught in Huntingburg; St. Joseph and St. Benedict, Evansville; Assumption, Indianapolis; St. James, Haubstadt; Elberfeld; Celestine; St.Thomas, Vincennes; and St. Anthony. She was a religious education teacher at St. Joseph Parish in Dale. She took care of her aged father for many years, including years while she was teaching. She also participated in a sabbatical program at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She served in supportive services and as sacristan at the monastery before serving in the ministry of prayer until her death.
Visitation will be from 2 - 6:45 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 1, at the monastery, followed by a wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, July 2, from 2 - 4:15 p.m. EDT. The funeral Mass will begin at 4:30 p.m. EDT on Monday. Burial will follow in the monastery cemetery.
