Evansville, Ind.
Robert L. Self, Commander U.S. Navy, Retired, 93, passed away July 14, 2012 of natural causes in Atlanta, GA.
"Bob" was born in Evansville December 11, 1918 to the late Christopher and Luella Self. After graduation from Bosse High School in 1936, Bob joined the U.S. Navy and served in both WWII and Korea, and was the recipient of the Silver Star and Legion of Merit for valor in combat. After retirement in 1957, Bob worked for Sterling Brewery, holding several positions including Advertising and Public Relations. He held positions of Safety and Personnel Director with FMC Corporation in Newport, Ind, New York City, and Houston, TX. He taught High School Naval ROTC in Columbus, OH before retiring to Florida in 1974.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Merle E. Self and granddaughters, Linnaea D. Ausenbaugh and Alison A. Kight. Surviving are his daughters, Karen (Douglas) Ausenbaugh of Evansville and Cynthia (Samuel) Kight of Woodstock GA; grandsons, Douglas W. Ausenbaugh of Indianapolis, and Andrew Kight of San Jose CA; great grandchildren, 2nd Lt. Douglas J. Ausenbaugh, U.S. Army, presently serving in Afghanistan, and Elyse and Meredith Ausenbaugh of Indianapolis.
Bob will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
