Virginia Stocking Simmons, 87, of Evansville passed away Monday, November 26, 2012 following a short illness.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. William Simmons after 66 years of marriage, a sister, Bettye Ann Hartley, a son, Jeffrey (Linda) Simmons, son, Stephen (Cheryl) Simmons, and daughter, Jennifer (Scott) Althaus. Other survivors include seven grandchildren, Jason, Aaron and Ethan Althaus, granddaughters, Jamie Benefiel, Julie Lerner and Alisabeth Simmons, and grandson, Josh Simmons and eight great grandchildren.
Virginia had graduated from Bosse High School, Evansville College and earned a Master of Social Work Degree at Kent School of Social Work University of Louisville. She worked for the former Child Guidance Center for over twenty years, finishing there as Director of Services. Virginia was an avid birder all her life and served a period as President of the Evansville Audubon Society. Another hobby that consumed much of her time was wildlife photography.
After she and her husband retired they had many wonderful years spending winters in Sarasota, Florida with friends and family. Virginia and Bill were married on a frosty snowy Friday evening of January the fourth, 1946. They were joined in matrimony at First Baptist Church by Drs. Frank Hamilton and Fredrick Rake. The stipulation was that they had to be married at six o'clock in the evening so the ministers could attend a Central High School basketball game. Dr. Hamilton's son Lee was on the Central team and Dr. Rake was an avid Central fan. Virginia and Bill have been active members of Trinity United Methodist Church for the past sixty-three years. Virginia was a loving, caring, supportive wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Friday, November 30, 2012 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel - 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville with Reverend Allen Amstutz officiating. Entombment will be in Oak Hill Mausoleum.
