William Russell Hammonds
62, of Newburgh, went to be with The Lord at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. His faith and positive attitude were a witness and inspiration to all who knew & loved him. Bill attended Crossroads Christian Church and served The Lord and his community through his participation and support of the Youth Services Bureau, House of Hope SWIN, and Kairos Prison Ministries. His passion for efficiency and love of people girded his years as CEO of Evansville Surgical Associates where he successfully "made decisions and solved problems." He served in the Air Force as a navigator from 1973 - 1979 and was stationed in Thailand for a year during the Vietnam War. Bill is survived by his wife, Tammy (Childs) Hammonds; son, Joshua (Sara) Hammonds of Oneonta, NY; son, Paul (Reagan) Hammonds of Evansville; daughter, Lesley Higgins (fiancé Chris Schmatlz) of Chicago IL; daughter, Apryl Higgins of New York City; son, Sean Higgins of Newburgh; grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor, Jakobi, and Lachlan Hammonds; mother, Gladys Hammonds of Evansville; sister, Lois (David) Van Meter of Wabash IN; brother, Robert (Karen) Hammonds of Evansville; sister, Brenda (Allen) Mounts of Newburgh; sister, Mary (Michael) Nelson of Evansville; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Hammonds. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 8 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. at Crossroads Christian Church 10800 Lincoln Ave. A celebration service of Bill's life will begin at 5:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Bill's memory to Bill Hammonds Memorial for his many charities in care of his family or Kairos Prison Ministry International Foundation, PO Box 4387, Winter Park, FL 32793.
Bill's life's request is that everyone would live out Micah 6:8, "and what does the Lord require of you? to act justly and to have mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
