Henry Appell
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Henry Richard Appell, 92, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Deaconess Hospital, surrounded by his family.
He was born October 4, 1918 in Evansville, Ind. Henry was a Christian and member of Terrace Park Baptist Church. During his early life, when he was raising his family, he was an active member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school superintendent and taught Sunday school. He also coached all their athletic teams.
Henry was a veteran of World War II, serving in Germany and France. He was retired from the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation in 1980. He was past president of the BSEO and editor of their newsletter. He was an accomplished poet, having one of his poems published. He also wrote numerous songs, having one recorded in Nashville. Henry loved to dance and was active in several dance clubs and rarely missed a Friday or Saturday night on the dance floor well into his 80s. Henry was a life member of VFW post 1114.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Ellen Appell; his first wife, Lorene (Rickard); second wife, Mary (Walker); sister, Katie Appell; and six brothers, Alex, Ben, Oscar, Leonard, Theodore and George.
Henry is survived by his daughter, Tonya (Dwight) Temple; sons, Tom (Doris) and Terry (Stacey), all of Evansville; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Deaconess Hospice Care staff for their special care and support during their father's final hours.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Alexander North Chapel. Henry made prior arrangements for his funeral. He requested no visitation with a private burial at Sunset Memorial Park.
