Bartgis, Jr.
Newburgh, IN — John "Dude" Bartgis, Jr., 87, of Newburgh passed away at 5:26 am, Friday, April 15, 2011 at VNA Charlier Hospice Center.
John was born September 23, 1923 in Hinton, West Virginia, the son of John, Sr. and Lillian (Pack) Bartgis. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1941. John was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII and also served in the National Guard. He was an active member of First Southern Baptist Church for 32 years where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Building Committee. John retired from Laborers Local Union #561. He began his career working at the C&O Railroad in Hinton, WV. During his career of constructing locks and dams he was promoted to foreman and then to superintendant for Dravo, Corp out of Pittsburg, PA. John was known as a hard worker and respected by his colleagues. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. John was a kind, caring person, who was always willing to help those in need. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Greeda (Durst) Bartgis of Newburgh, son, Tim Bartgis (Patti) of Wetumpka, AL, sister, Margie Adkins of North Carolina, sister in law, Patty Foster of Hinton, WV, brother in law, Fred Durst (Ina) of Union, KY, grandchildren, Mary Katherine, Joseph, Mathew, Corbin and Joshua Bartgis and great grandchildren, Tate and Tanner Bartgis. He was preceded in death by brothers, Shannon and Billy Bartgis and a grandson, Mason Bartgis.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at First Southern Baptist Church, 25 S. Cullen Ave., Evansville with Reverend Don Moore and Pastor David Cullison officiating.
Graveside Services will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in Greenwood and Serenity White Chapel Funeral Home Cemetery in Montgomery, AL.
Friends may call from 5 pm until 7 pm, Monday, April 18, 2011 at Boone Funeral Home - East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville and again from 10 am until time of service at 11 am, Tuesday, at the church.
Memorial Contributions may be made to First Southern Baptist Church, 25 S. Cullen Ave., Evansville, IN 47715.
