Valada Rice, 98, passed from our hands to those of God's on January 20, 2014, she was 98 years old. Valada was born and raised in Evansville, attended Sacred Heart School and Reitz High School. It was there in a journalism class she met and captured the heart of her future husband, Wayne Rice. She and Wayne were married 72 years. After his passing she split her time between her two daughters until her frailty required residence at Jasmine House in Lake Havasu City, AZ, where she was greatly loved and from where she deceased.
Valada had worn many hats in her lifetime. She was devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, gardener and canner, Girl Scout Leader, seamstress, crafter, and choral member who sang at Purdue. When Wayne's work moved the family to California, she was a band parent organizer and later the Manager of Arts and Gifts at a major department store. After retirement, she became a golfer and started the Niners for retired ladies at Mission Lakes Country Club.
She is survived by her daughters, Tinalee Whelchel and Jayne Sams; her grandchildren, David Sams and Sarah Burchard; and an honorary granddaughter, Denise Steinbring.
Valada will have visitation hours from 2-5:00 PM, Tuesday, January 28, 2014, with a rosary at 2:30 PM at Alexander Newburgh Chapel. She will be interred at Park Lawn Cemetery on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at 10:00 AM.
