Norma Jean Walker also known as "Red" to her friends and "Billie" to her family, 86, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014, at Heritage Center.
Norma Jean was born in Evansville, Indiana, on May 25, 1927, to the late John and Jenny (Bankert) Walker. Norma graduated from Central High School in 1945. She was a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Norma Jean received her nursing degree from St. Mary's School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the Evansville State Hospital for 33 years. Norma Jean attended St. Anthony Catholic Church for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and going to see the horse races at Ellis Park.
Norma Jean is survived by her dearest friend and cousin, Anne Pirnat, of Evansville, IN; sister, Rosaline "Rosie" Bowen, of Evansville, IN; niece, Pam Diehl (Jack), of Evansville, IN; nephews, Bill Alford (Jackie), of Evansville, IN, Rick Bowen (Theresa), of Evansville, IN, Don Bowen (Sheila), of Evansville, IN, Jerry Alford (Phyllis), of Newburgh, IN, and Ronald Alford (Betty), of Evansville, IN; brother-in-law, William Alford, of Evansville, IN.
Norma Jean is preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Jeanette Alford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 704 North 1st Ave., Evansville, IN 47710, with Father Jay Davidson celebrating. Burial will follow at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Browning Funeral Home where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m.
