Thomas Sanford Howell, 88, of Evansville, IN, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Heritage Center.
Tom was born on September 14, 1925, in Louisville, KY, to the late, Margie (Thomas) and Damon Howell. Tom owned and operated Emge Deli for 37 years. He previously worked for Durkee Foods, Kraft Foods and Victor Emge Meat Company. Tom was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving on an LST near the Phillipines. He was a Kentucky Colonel, member of Lessing Lodge 464 and Daylight Masonic Lodge, where he was Past Master. He was also a Honorary member of Suburban Lodge in Louisville, KY and Swords of Bunker Hill. Tom was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite and Hadi Shrine Hospital Staff. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he received the Rager Award in 2004. Tom was a family man at heart, never missing his children's or grandchildren's sporting events. He was an avid sports fan, especially loved the University of Kentucky.
Tom is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jan Howell; daughters, Deborah Townsend (David), Orange Park, FL, and Sandra Klosterman, Louisville, KY; stepsons, Lee Slater (Rhonda) and Rick Slater, both of Evansville, IN; granddaughters, Monique Burnett, Louisville, KY, Kellie Goranflo, Jacksonville, FL, and Macey Klosterman, Louisville, KY; grandsons, Andy Gilliland (Barbara), Jacksonville, FL, Neil Goranflo (Miranda), Shepherdsville, KY, Russell Townsend (Heather), Jacksonville, FL, and Max Klosterman, Louisville, KY; stepgranddaughters, Renae Slater, Evansville, IN, Ashley Slater, Lynnville, IN and Alyssa Slater, Lafayette, IN; stepgrandsons, Christopher Slater, Bloomington, IN, and Aaron Slater, Lafayette, IN; great-granddaughters, Hannah, Kaitlyn and Gabby; great-grandson, Carter; stepgreat-granddaughters, Emma, Isabella and Dayton; stepgreat-grandsons, Josef and Alex; sister, Helen Murphy, Louisville, KY; brother, Edwin Howell, Bardstown, KY; also surviving are cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Howell; sons, Thomas Damon and Tommie Lee Howell; great-granddaugther, Hailey Goranflo; and former wife, Thelma.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 613 Cherry Street, Evansville, IN 47713, with Father Steve Lintzenich and Father David A. Martin celebrating. Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 E. Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN, where a masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also visit from 9 a.m. until Mass time on Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church.
