Vernon 'Shorty' Herman
Evansville, Ind.
Vernon "Shorty" Herman, 90, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Deaconess Hospital Gateway Campus.
Mr. Herman owned and operated Herman's Turf Supply at Ellis Park for over 60 years and was a 70 year member of IBEW Local #16. He attended Reitz High School where he played football. Immediately after high school, he joined the United States Army Air Corps. After leaving service he became a thoroughbred owner and trainer and had a successful 60 year career. He was also a Kentucky Colonel. Shorty was a hard-working, kind-hearted man. He enjoyed growing tomatoes, sitting on the backside of Ellis Park, feeding stray cats and birds. Most of all he enjoyed watching his grandson, Daniel, play baseball. Shorty was dearly loved by family and friends and had recently celebrated his 90th birthday with two childhood friends from Reitz High School.
Surviving Shorty are two daughters, Sonja Herman and Lavon Wood, both of Evansville; a granddaughter, Tracey (Jeff) Titus; and great-grandchild, Daniel Sander; several nieces, nephews and his five beloved dogs.
Shorty was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Annetta (Eaves) Herman.
