John Robert Stone, 83, of, Evansville Indiana died Tuesday, August 19, 2014.
John was born in Chicago, Illinois, to John C. and Anna (Endress) Stone, on June 13, 1931. John graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1949 where he played varsity basketball and tennis. He attended St. Louis University School of Commerce and Finance. His banking career spanned over 30 years at Permanent Federal Savings Bank. The veteran home loan maker was promoted to senior vice-president and manager of lending operations in 1985, in 1990 he was promoted to executive vice-president. In 1992, John was elected to the Board of Directors of Permanent Federal Savings Bank, retiring in 1995. In his early years, John worked for Crystal Pearl Products Company, Indian Finance and Right Finance and Insurance Company.
He was an active member of St. Benedict's Cathedral, serving on the finance and education commissions, youth baseball and serving as a church usher. John served his community in numerous ways including his positions as Director of the Evansville Coalition for the Homeless and the President of ECHO Housing Corporation. He was a longtime fan of barbershop singing quartets and the Chicago Cubs. A big part of John's life was boating with family and friends.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rita (Bryant) Stone; sons, Christopher D. (Rebecca) Stone, Robert B. Stone; daughter, Laurie A. Brummel, (Steve); granddaughters, Madeline B. and Lauren N. Stone; sisters, Mary Margaret Longtine, (Bill), all of Evansville, Indiana, Joanne Beirise, Dayton, Ohio and cousin, Roy E. Stone, Avon, CT and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles "Chuck" Stone who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII and his "double first cousins", who were more like brothers to him, Norbert J. Stone, Don C.Stone and Frank S. Stone.
A celebration of John's life will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711 at 10:00 AM, with Father Ted Tempel officiating. Entombment will follow at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 2:00-8:00 PM, Friday, August 22, 2014, at Browning Funeral Home and again on Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time.
