Daniel Wertz Mitchell
Evansville, Ind.
Daniel Wertz Mitchell, of Evansville, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2014. He was born January 23, 1928 in Phoenix, Ariz. His father, Larry R. Mitchell, passed away when Dan was eight years old. He moved to Evansville with his mother, Audrey P. Wertz in 1939.
Dan attended Bosse High School and graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn. He was attending Evansville College when he enlisted in the Army in 1946. Upon his discharge, he enrolled at Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Finance. While in Bloomington, he met his future wife, Nancy Evelyn Byrd. They were married February 12, 1950. Upon returning from their honeymoon, Dan began working in the Transit Department of Old National Bank where his duties included the opening and distributing of mail. He held numerous positions at the Bank culminating with his appointment as President and CEO in 1980. He was instrumental in the passage of Indiana's multi-bank holding company legislation in 1985. This legislation changed the landscape of the banking industry.
Dan was extremely active in the community serving on the boards of many local charities including Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, University of Evansville, Evansville Philharmonic, Evansville Dance Theatre and Welborn Baptist Hospital. He was also very involved with United Way, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity and Methodist Temple. Following his retirement in 1994, he continued to put his mark on many organizations including The Beacon Group and Tri-State Food Bank.
He was the recipient of many well deserved awards and honors: National President of Robert Morris Associates, The Distinguished Citizens Award from Buffalo Trace Council, Rotary Club Civic Award, University of Evansville Honorary Alumni, Businessman of the Year given by Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. He was inducted into the Evansville Business Hall of Fame in March, 2008.
Dan had many talents and passions. He dedicated himself to being a father, grandfather, Sunday School Teacher, friend, writer, painter, life coach, gardener and a fundraiser for charities. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose life he touched.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey P. Mitchell (Wertz) and Larry R. Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Mitchell (Byrd); sons, Daniel L. Mitchell (Sandi) and Douglas R. Mitchell (Kimberley); daughter, Karen M. Eastridge (Kevin); grandchildren, Erika E. Haynie (Ken) , Douglas T. Eastridge, Laura A. Mitchell, Claire M. Mitchell, Daniel W. Mitchell II, Kate N. Mitchell and Patrick L. Mitchel;l and great-grandchildren, Harper M., Kenneth M. and George M. Haynie.
The family extends special thanks to Holiday Health Care, Home Instead Senior Care, Heritage Center, Heritage Hospice and Bruce Sadler.
Visitation will be from 3 pm to 6 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, IN 47714.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2014, at Methodist Temple, 2109 Lincoln Ave, Evansville, IN 47714, with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dan W. and Nancy B. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship, University of Evansville, Office of Development, 1800 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47722; Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, 3701 Bellemeade Ave, Evansville, IN 47714; and Methodist Temple, 2109 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714.
