Thomas Traylor Obituary

Thomas W. Traylor
Evansville, Ind.
Thomas W. Traylor, 73, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away at Select Specialty Hospital surrounded by his wife and sons on May 9, 2013.
He was a devoted husband, and a loving and supportive father and grandfather. He was actively involved in raising his sons and loved coaching soccer for all of his boys. Tom was a advocate and supporter of Evansville area soccer programs.
A member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Tom was a devout Catholic and very supportive of Catholic education and ministry.
Tom will be remembered as a brilliant business man, engineer, and entrepreneur. He received his BSCE from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961, and his MBA from Stanford University in 1963. He helped to catapult Traylor Bros., Inc., a company founded by his father William in 1946, into one of North America's leaders in underground, marine, and bridge construction. A testament to his many engineering contributions, Tom was honored by The Beavers in 2008, with the prestigious Beavers Management Award and in 2010 by The Moles for his outstanding achievement in construction, both results of nominations by his colleagues. He was a member of other fraternal organizations of construction and engineering professionals such as the Moles, the Construction Industry Round Table, the National Academy of Construction, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also served as president of the Beavers organization.
Tom was a member of the World Presidents Organization and Chief Executive Organization, and he served as director on various community, national, and university boards, including Fifth Third Bank and the University of Evansville. He and his wife, Nancy, have generously supported civic and community organizations such as JDRF, United Way, WNIN, the Evansville Museum, and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra—an organization that represented his beloved appreciation for music and the arts. Their history of philanthropy is also evident at Evansville Day School, Reitz Memorial High School and the University of Evansville, as well as other educational institutions that have touched their lives.
A man with many interests, Tom had a passion for flying and obtained his instrument rating to fly his own plane. He and his wife were avid travelers visiting many sites throughout the United States and around the world. He was a voracious reader of a great variety of topics.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, William Ferris Traylor; and mother, Marjorie Ahlering Traylor.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Sartore Traylor, of Evansville, Ind.; and sons, Thomas William, Jr. (Lisa), of Laguna Hills, Calif.; Michael Thomas (Michelle), of Manhattan Beach, Calif; Christopher Scott (Niki), of Evansville, Ind., and Daniel Allen (Catherine), of Dallas, Texas. Also surviving are a brother, Glen Robert Traylor (Nancy), of Chicago, Ill., and sister, Suzanne Teater (Edward), of Nicholasville, Ky. Tom was lovingly known as "Granddad" by his 13 grandchildren, Julia Kristine, Melanie Lauren, Sean Michael, Karenna Lareau, Natalie Michelle, Gwyneth Nicole, Marshall Thomas, Charlotte Claire, Stella Grace, Sydney Hope, Elizabeth Jane, Courtney Carolann and Margaret Marie.
The family wishes to thank Tom's many doctors, as well as his many care givers and staff at the Select Hospital, Deaconess Gateway and the Cleveland Clinic for their wonderful and compassionate care.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday May 12, 2012, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron, Evansville, IN 47714.
Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday May 13, 2013, at the funeral home and will continue with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Cathedral, 1328 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47714.

I always remember the time Tom and I were partners at a Friday night Scramble at the Sanctuary. When we got near the third Hole he told me to see if I could hit the ball far enough to break a window in your home. He had a great sense of humor and was taken from this world much to soon.

Nancy, Glen, & family, it seems that time is suppose to heal everything, but I am sure it will never quite heal that void that Tom filled your lives. We hope your are doing well and that sometime we will get to see you at a re-union. We were all set to come twice but understood why the Committee cancelled it. I look forward to seeing everyone.
Our best to the Traylor family

Tom became a good friend during our tenure on the University of Evansville board of Trustees. We had many discussions on early days in Evansville and about Flying. He was passionate about both. He and Nancy did so much for Evansville and our University.
My Dad and Tom’s Father were friends and did business together on several occasions.
RIP Tom, you have done well with your Faith, Family, and Evansville.

I remember all of your wonderful family from my years as a teacher at Evansville Day. Although I moved to Bloomington before I taught any of the boys, I so remember what a lovely family were the Tom Traylors. What a giving and good life Tom lived. More than being a part of impressive acts and events, I know he was a special father and husband. I am so sorry for your losing him and know all of you will give each other comfort.

Dear Susie, I don't even know if you remember me, but I used to live down the street from you on Runnymeade, and my brother Randy was a friend of "Tommy's." I used to love to come to your welcoming home to play in the basement (Tommy had Erector Sets even then) or in your room with your collection of horses. Randy just heard of Tommy's passing and let me know. We were saddened to hear about it. Please know what warm thoughts I still have of you and your family these many years later. Fondly, Kay (Mitchell) Watson

Nancy, Glen & Families
I just found out about the loss of Tom. I too, remember his T-bird as Glen got his hands on it every so often. I have great memories of the backyard b-ball games. I also remember working a summer on I-65 near Seymour, IN later getting to have lunch with "Grandpa" Ferris at the Elks Club with him and my Dad. I would not have even known about Tom if it wasn't for a conversation with Robbie Kent. Please except my condolences on your loss and I hope to see you all at the next reunion (2015). I do really enjoy seeing everyone. Should you ever be out in the Phoenix area give us a call. [email protected] . God bless you all and good health to you.

He was the brightest man I ever met , yet always loving , quiet , respected (and respectful) . May you take comfort that his earthly pain has subsided and that he rests in peace. Y'all are in our prayers .

I will also's remember babysitting and he would never remember where I lived (for 13 years) and he would always have to turn around to get me home. How I will never forget those rides. Love always and thank you for the opportunity to give me the chance to look after your precious kids.

Nancy and family– it is hard for me to believe that Tom has passed. I only saw him in good health. Always energetic. Hard-working. And extremely bright. Tom might've been the smartest guy I knew –unless Bill Traylor was smarter.
Tom loved his boys like I love mine; with real passion and purpose. I can imagine you will miss him dearly.
Tom will have no regrets about the life he lived. Only that he could not have lived it longer with the ones he loved the most. We should all be so fortunate.

Mr. Traylor was one of the nicest men, the kind you just know would be a great dad.

At the country club, he would come in to the "halfway house" after one of his many worldly trips and order an egg salad sandwich and a Stewarts root beer. He'd say "Dawn, I just want to sit here and not talk and enjoy the peace and quiet."

When he did talk to me, we'd chat about my memories of his dad driving like Mario Andretti in his mustang, his sons and grandkids and how proud of them he was.

It was always apparent how much he loved his precious Nancy.

He will be greatly missed and forever respected by so many.

Mrs. Traylor and sons and family, I offer my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Nancy and family, We are so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. You have our deepest sympathy. Tom and we were childhood friends at St. Ben's and Memorial. Tom's family always made all the boys feel welcome just hanging around his house. We were not close with Tom after high school, but we always enjoyed seeing and reminiscing at the reunions. Tom was surely one of the least pretentious persons persons we have ever met - he was just one of the guys; he was truly a friend. It was great knowing him. Our best to you and all your family in this time of sorrow.

Nancy, I was one of the reknown/infamous "Blue Boys" at Memorial, along with Jerry Russell, George Brothers, Ron Timbarge, Kenny Dilger....we were hot stuff, at least we thought we were

Nancy, my favorite memory of Tom, although it wasn't a "favorite" when it took place, happened right after Tom was gifted with a brand new '57 black, shiny Thunderbird. I has my dad's old '48 Chevy. Tom lived right across the strees from Sara Endress's home. I pulled out from the curb as Tom zoomed by and my fender raked the side of his brand new car. We were good buddies so the whole thing worked itself out.

From the write-up it's obvious that you, Tom, and your family had a very fulfilling life. I wish you all that's right and good for you as you continue on your life path. My deepest condollances to the loss of your Tom.
