Edith Schmidt Obituary

Edith E. Schmidt
Evansville, IN
Edith E. Schmidt, 89, of Evansville, IN died peacefully June 10, 2013 at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Edith was born in Evansville December 5, 1923, the only child of Alphia (Chapman) and Henry Ellerbrook. She attended Delaware Elementary School, Central High School and Evansville College.
Edith was employed by the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation as a kindergarten assistant teacher for much of her professional career. She taught kindergarten children at Stringtown, Fairlawn, West Terrace, Scott and Vogel Schools. In addition, along with her husband, Paul, Edith spent many summers directing the summer recreation program at Vogel School.
Edith was an active member of Christ Church United Church of Christ since 1953. Throughout the years she served as church secretary, Sunday school teacher, choir member, Elder, rummage sale organizer and church librarian. She was especially proud of and supported the church's Riley Hospital Angel Tree program. She also began and coordinated a program known as "Called to Care," which focused on the health and special needs of neighborhood, Protestant home and church members. One of her favorite volunteer activities at Christ Church was to serve as historian, writing a monthly article for the church bulletin, the Key News, that documented activities from 50 and 25 years ago. She completed one for July 2013 just a week ago.
In addition Edith was active for many years in the Three Arts organization, American Business Women's Association, and she rarely missed an opportunity to volunteer at the United Caring shelter. Edith enjoyed golf, crafts and water color painting.
In addition to her parents, Edith was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Paul W. Schmidt. She is survived by her daughter Paula Schmidt-Lewis and her husband Jeffrey Lewis of Indianapolis; son Steven Paul Schmidt, PhD, and his partner, Richard Krochka, of Akron, OH; sister-in-law Martha Jean Allison of Cleveland, TN; four grand-children including David Paul Lewis and his fiancé Mitra Khaksari, Kristin Schmidt Lewis, Allyson Schmidt Guran and her husband Mark, and Taryn E. Schmidt; special "adopted" daughters include Lucy Axtell, MD, and Tami DuPriest Vanette. In the past year, her primary caretakers, Angel Cook and Lynda Hunsaker also grew to be like daughters to Edith.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday June 15, 2013 at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 3601 Washington Avenue with Dr. John Charles officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 pm until 7 pm on Friday, June 14, 2013 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue. Friends will also be received beginning at 9 am on Saturday, June 15, 2013, in the foyer of Christ Church before the funeral service.
