Ronald F. Wannemuehler, 75, of Newburgh, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013 at VNA Charlier Hospice. He was born June 25, 1938 in Evansville to Henry and Mathilda (Wildemann) Wannemuehler.
Ron was a graduate of Mater Dei High School where he played basketball and golf and received a golf scholarship to Indiana University. He graduated from Evansville College and received his Masters Degree from Indiana University. Ron began his career at Memorial High School in 1961 as a teacher, head basketball coach, freshman football coach, cross country and golf coach. As head basketball coach at Memorial, Ron won the school's first 2 sectionals and both regionals. In 1979 he became Memorial High School's Athletic Director and served until his retirement in 2003. He was inducted into Memorial High School's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Ron was secretary and treasurer for the SIAC for 27 years and received the SIAC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Newburgh and received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. Ron enjoyed playing tennis and golf with his many friends and traveling with Liz.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Cletus Wannemuehler and sister, Loretta Weinzapfel.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Liz; children, Karen Watters (Scott) of Evansville, Randy Wannemuehler (Mary) of Indianapolis, IN and Sara Bertram (John) of Newburgh; grandchildren, Drew, Colleen and Ellie Watters, Henry Wannemuehler, Matthew and Michael Bertram; sister, Mary Joan Knapp (Bill); brother, Mel Wannemuehler (Frances) both of Evansville; many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2:00 -8:00 pm Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, IN 47714 and will continue from 9:30 - 10:00 am Monday, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd, Newburgh, IN 47630.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Monday, October 7, 2013 at the church with Fr. Thomas Kessler officiating.
Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Newburgh.
