Dewey J. Burden, 82, of Evansville, IN, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 at VNA Charlier Hospice Center.
Dewey was born March 7, 1932 to Everett and Mary Burden of Caneyville, Ky. He graduated from Rockport High School in 1950 and married Charlcie Johnson on October 9, 1950, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. During his service, he decided to go back to school and graduated from Oakland City University in 1960. Dewey faithfully served His Savior Jesus Christ and pastored churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. He also taught school in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1968, he formed Continental Management Corporation, an insurance agency, for life and health insurance and remained in the business until his retirement in 2000. He served as Trustee of Oakland City University for six years and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities degree in 1989. He loved to travel with his wife and had visited all 50 states along with many foreign countries.
Dewey is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Charlcie (Johnson) Burden; their four children, Cheryl L. Russell of Hope, In; Pamela K. Russell of Lake Worth, Fl; Gary L. Burden of Evansville, In; Jeffrey W. Burden of Evansville, In along with nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He also had five sisters and two brothers, Thelma Abshier of Owensboro, Ky; Joanne Rose of Rockport, In; Patsy Atchison of Rockport, In; Jean Cain of Port Isabel, Tx; Clydean Gish of Henderson, Ky; William Burden of Bartow, Fl; Arvel Burden of Bloomington, Il and twenty nephews and nieces. This is only a brief list of those who were touched by Dewey over the breadth of his 82 years, all of whom will no doubt miss him. Through us all, his memory and influence will reverberate for years to come as a lasting tribute to him.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at The Church of the Cross, 7525 N. Green River Road, Evansville, IN 47725 with Rev. Jack Eberhardt officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit from 4-8 P.M. on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711, and again from 9:00 A.M. until service time on Wednesday at The Church of the Cross.
