Robert Hargrave Obituary
Evansville, Indiana
Robert W. Hargrave, 94 of Evansville, IN former President of Citizen's National Bank and Holding Company passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at Altria Senior Living Center. Robert was born on May 8, 1920 in Evansville, IN to Erma and Jasper Hargrave.
Those that knew Bob know that the foundation of his life was built on his firm belief in God, his love of his family, his determination to speak positively about those around him and his joy for life.
From an early age Bob felt that personal accountability was the most positive reflection he could have for his family. This work ethic led to academically consistent high honors and a storied sports career.
As a quarterback Bob led Memorial High School Football team to back to back undefeated seasons in 1936 and 1937 and a national championship in 1937.
He was provided a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame where he lettered in football and baseball. His accomplishments on the field for Notre Dame led to All-American recognition in 1940 for football. He was later induction into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame for his overall career achievements. In 2012 he was inducted into the Inaugural Memorial Sports Hall of Fame.
After college he enlisted in the Navy where he was commissioned as an officer served in the Pacific theater
During his senior year at Notre Dame he agreed to a blind date with Florence Molyneaux and continued that 'Date of a Lifetime" for the next 64 years. Bob and Floatie were married in San Francisco Nov. 11 1944. After WWII they briefly lived in Chicago, her home town, then moved to Evansville in 1949 when Bob was recruited to work at Citizen's National Bank in their trust department. Seven children filled their busy lives and their hearts. During this time he became "Coach" to many of the Christ the King football teams.
Some of Bob's activities and involvements included the Vanderburgh County Sherriff's Merit Board, Memorial Booster Club, Honorary Co-Chair of the 2014 Memorial Capital Campaign, The Quarterback Club, St. Mary's Hospital Foundation Board, Christ the King Finance Committee, Evansville Kennel Club and Evansville Country Club.
Bob is survived by his Son, Robert Jr. (Kip) and his wife Terri Hargrave, of Syracuse, NY; Daughter, Chris and her husband, Stu Wolff of Richmond, VA; Son, Tom and his wife Mary Hargrave of Orlando, FL; Daughter, Susie and her husband, Doug Bell of Evansville, IN; Daughter-in-law, Anne Hargrave of Iowa City, IA; Son, Mike and wife Deborah Hargrave of Charlotte, NC; Daughter, Jane and her husband Tim McMahon of Fairfield, IA; Grandchildren, Mike, Maggie, Annie and Gus Hargrave; Dori, Alison and Courtney Wolff, Dan, Ryan, Kelly, Nick and A.J. Hargrave, Molly, Lainey and Gus Bell, Erin, Shaun and Meghan Hargrave, Rachel and Sarah Hargrave, Connor, Kyle and Abby McMahon and 16 Great Grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Floatie, his parents and beloved son John Hargrave (1954-1990).
Visitation will be Friday, August 1, 2:00-8:00 pm at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, with a Memorial Service held at 7:30pm. Visitation will continue from 9:30-10:00 am Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3101 Bayard Park Dr., Evansville, IN 47714.
Funeral service will begin at 10:00 am Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the church with Father Ted Temple and Father Alex Zenthoffer officiating.
Entombment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 3010 E. Chandler Ave. Evansville, IN. 47714 or Reitz Memorial High School Fund, 1500 Lincoln Ave. Evansville, IN. 47714

Even though I knew Bob for a very short time, his sense of humor, genuine interest in you as a person, and breadth of knowledge impressed me. I truly enjoyed conversing with him. I am sorry I did not know Bob for a longer period of time.

Susie and Doug and all of this wonderful family, Bob was one of the most amazing men I ever met. I loved the days I was scheduled to be with him. I have thought of him many times over the years since I was there in your home and hoped and prayed he was still doing well. I remember babysitting for Mike and Jane Ann when I was 12 & 13 while Mr. & Mrs. Hargrave attended the MHS football games. The kids were fun, and Bob & Floatie were so kind and friendly --- always bringing a smile to one's face! John was both my classmate and friend from K-12. Mr. Hargrave was a outstanding man! He will be dearly missed i waited on him at The Evansville Kennel Club on Wed lunches with the ROMEO GROUP and also some evenings with his family. I will miss his smiling face and postive outlook on life. There is not enough room for me to tell how great of a man he was and how much i cared about him. My thought and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time. I will miss him so much! I know a lot of people will too. I feel very honored to have know him and waited on him for all the years he came to the Kennel Club. With loving thoughts and prayers you will be missed so much Mr. Hargrave. ?? i pray for comfort for his family right now. I know i will deeply miss him.

I just read the obituary notice in the Evansville newspaper and it was a nice tribute to Bob and to his family. He was a good support to me and to the school. It was difficult for he and his family to lose a son and family member in a swimming accident during his time in high school. That was a very difficult mourning period for the family and for his many friends.
Today they started to put a new synthetic grass cover over the Notre Dame football field. Now, what would Bob Hargrave think of that?
Remembering him with a prayer in thanksgiving for a life well-lived.

What an honor to have known and been coached by (at Christ the King) such an awesome gentleman who instilled in us, not only football, but respect for others, team-mates and opposition as well. One of the nicest man I have ever known. I didn't get to see him as much as I would have liked. Loving husband, caring father, and my Uncle Bob. He loved his family so much. Bob was an inspiration to me and many others, including his wonderful children. He will be greatly missed.

Some of the happiest time of our family were spent with the Hargrave family in the 1960's on Boeke Road. Flotie and Bob and all of their children will always be remembered with love.

My deepest sympathy to the Hargrave family. I worked in the commercial loan dept. of Citizens Bank in the 60s. Bob worked in the Trust Dept. on the 2nd floor of the main office on 4th St. I had many dealings with him and always thought he was the most kind and polite person at the bank. Always very professional. May he rest in peace with the Lord.
