BONNIE MARKIN Bonnie passed peacefully on Saturday December 8, 2012. Born February 18, 1948, Bonnie lived most of her life in Port Alberni except for a short time in Rossland where she graduated and learned to ski on Red Mountain. She got her teaching career under way with a two year diploma from UBC. Later she eventually earned her Bachelor of Elementary Education by taking courses every summer. Finally around 1990, she went back to UBC to get her degree in Special Education. She loved teaching and taught for over 30 years starting at Alberni Elementary, then Maquinna & finally Gill. Before teaching, she travelled on her own in Europe, and with her best friend Diane Perkovic to Yugoslavia among other countries. Later in life she went on a couple of cruises, one for Bridge players that took her to the Caribbean. She was an avid Bridge player and played regularly with her Bridge partner, Ken Hutchinson for many years. She loved figure skating and going to see the Ice Capades. Bonnie taught floor hockey in her younger years, enjoyed playing volleyball and took up swimming in her thirties. Bonnie was kind, caring and generous especially with family and friends. She helped her nieces and nephew when they asked for help. She also generously donated regularly to The Variety Club. She always had cats she loved dearly, starting with the infamous 'Fat Cat'. Also there was Chester, and who can forget Guinevere, the gorgeous big grey kitty taught to jump through her arms! and her little dog Lancelot (Lance for short) too. She really loved her white 1977 Firebird and was thrilled when she bought it! She also loved nice shoes from Ingledew's and designer labels. Her favourite music was definitely The Beatles. Bonnie's last years were spent living with Alzheimer's in Echo Village lovingly cared for by a wonderful woman named Maureen O'Hare. Her Dad George was a huge part of her daily life, taking her out every day till she could no longer manage. Together, along with all the kind people at Echo Village, Bonnie managed to live out her life with dignity. Predeceased by her mother, Jeannie Markin, and survived by dad George Markin, sister Dianne (Aussie) Sveistrup, brother George Markin Jr, nephew Ron Brevik, nieces Marie Brevik & Tiffany (Wayne) Zral. She also leaves extended family members, great nephews and nieces, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, her dear close friends the Dodsworth's family, and so many more. Rest in peace Bonnie Jean, we shall miss you.
