Donald D. Smith(1948-2013)

Donald D. Smith, 64, of Baker, passed away Oct. 31, 2013.

Don was born in Nevada, Mo. and graduated from Andover High School in Andover, Kan. in 1966. He went on to get his A and P License from Wichita Vocational Technical School in 1994. In July of 2000, he received his Associate of Applied Science degree from Cowley Community College.

Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1968 as an aircraft metalsmith. While in the Navy, he had the opportunity to work on 27 types and models of aircraft. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in June 1988 after 20 years of service.

After retiring from the navy, he continued working with aircraft at Boeing Wichita and Boeing Seattle as an aircraft inspector.

While employed at Boeing, he had the opportunity to travel to China, Israel, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. He retired from Boeing after 20 years in 2010.

Don loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He had the pleasure of traveling around the world. He lived in Baker the past two years but was previously from Benton, Kan.

His father, Eldon L. Smith, and uncle, Charles R. Smith, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Opal L. Smith; daughters, Laurie J. Rowan and husband, Kerry of Baker, and Cheryl A. Smith of Owasso, Okla.; grandson, Austin D. Smith of Owasso; nephew, Shane M. Mason and wife, Stephanie and their children of Wellington, Kan.; mother, Mildred R. Smith of Salina, Kan.; brother, Ronald L. Smith and wife, Lyan of Valley Falls, Kan. and their children; and aunt, Thelma Jean Smith of Crestview.

Trahan Family Funeral Home, Pensacola, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 9:30 a.m. until the procession leaves at 10:30 a.m. for interment at Barrancas National Cemetery.

Don was a great husband, son, father, uncle, brother, and papa. He will always be in our lives.
