Gene "Rich" Harris left this earthly home on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. He lived most of his life in "Sugartown" (off Antioch Road in Crestview), home sweet home to Gene.

In his earlier years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed playing his electric guitar, and so enjoyed listening to Hank Williams Sr. Gene was as stubborn as an ox and as sweet as a lamb.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 28 years, Brenda; daughter, Donna Cook; sons, Richard and Chris, and daughter-in-law, Crystal Montgomery. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher (Amber) Meeks, Jacquline (J.J.) Cook, Ashley (Matt) Baxley, Mikel and Tyler Harris, and Cory Kraeger, Britney Harris, Allyson Montgomery and Sam Phillips; four great-grandchildren, with three on the way; and faithful companions, Brutus and Pollyanna.

He also is survived by his siblings, Jimmy (Cindy) Harris (Jimmy was faithful, visiting him several times daily), Marcy Labado, Mary Hudson, Marybell Harris and Carl (Cheryl) Harris, Randy and Patti Walker, Cary and Sandy Hurst; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Cindy Harris, James (Becky) Harris, Brandon, Curtis and Krystal.

His parents, Jim and Beulah Harris, and sister Joyce Brooks preceded Gene in death.

Special thanks to Dr. Christopher and staff; Covenant Hospice, especially Rita, Sara, Bud, Marie, Mary, Debra, Carmen and Karen; and Gulf Medical Supply.

Also, special thanks to Kathy Harrell.

All went beyond their duties.

A loving, heart-warming thank you to Jackie Harris for all her help and for always being there. We love you all.

Services were held Jan 21, 2013 with visitation from 5-6 p.m. and services at 6 p.m. Cremation, at Gene's request, followed.

Interment will occur later in a private ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Covenant Hospice of Crestview, 370 W. Redstone Ave., Crestview, FL 32536, in honor of Gene.

Brackney Funeral Home made arrangements.
