Albertha Bendickson Obituary
Albertha Bendickson, age 95, of Mahnomen, MN, died Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home, Mahnomen, MN.

Albertha terWisscha, the daughter of Luite and Geurtje (Brinkhuis) terWisscha was born on January 6, 1923. She grew up in the Bejou area and attended country school there. As a young woman, Albertha served as a caregiver for a terminally ill neighborhood child as well as waitressing at the Moran's truck stop in McIntosh, MN. On November 4, 1941, Albertha was united in marriage to Bertram Bendickson, also of Bejou. The couple spent the first years of marriage apart while Bert served in World War II. Albertha moved, with her young children, to California where she helped with the war efforts as a Rosie the Riveter. The family then returned to Bejou to make their home and over the years Albertha and Bert were blessed with 11 children. Although Albertha was a busy mom she was a very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Bejou community. She spent many years working with the Mahnomen Health Center and helped bring Hospice care to the area. Albertha also spent years working with US census. She spent most of her career years working for the United States Post Office, retiring as Bejou Post Master. Civic and community involvement were very important to Albertha. She was instrumental in the development of the Bejou VFW Auxiliary, serving as their first President. In her later years, Albertha also volunteered with the Headstart program becoming "Grandma" to many. She was incredibly passionate about her work with the historical society, helping to organize the Mahnomen County Historical Society. She loved to travel! Her many trips with family and friends always brought back a "story."

Albertha always had a large vegetable garden which allowed her to can and freeze an abundance of produce. With her large family, she was always preparing meals, and no one ever went hungry. Albertha cherished her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They enjoyed playing board games and cards together, and there was always a jigsaw puzzle to work on. She was a wonderful scrabble player and earned the title of "Canasta Queen." Albertha made everyone feel special, making sure all received a card on holidays. Throughout the 95 years of her life, "time" was Albertha's greatest gift. The time given to her family, her friends, and her community will never be forgotten.

Albertha is survived by seven sons: Harlan (Diane) Bendickson of Moorhead, MN, Gary (Joyce) Bendickson, Gene (Laura) Bendickson, Dale (Susan) Bendickson, Bert (Andrea) Jr. Bendickson, Curtis Bendickson all of Bejou, MN, and Lyndon (Robin) Bendickson of Mahnomen, MN; three daughters: Barbara Flakne of Fertile, MN, Lavonne (Mark) Froemke of Crookston, MN, and Carol (Joe) Farrell of Big Lake, MN; 33 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bertram; son, Alton; great grandson, Jacob; great-great granddaughter, Scarlette; brothers: Clarence, Fred and Ernest; and sisters: Alice, Josephine and Jeanette.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 6, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bejou, MN. Visitation will also take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wednesday, September 5, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 p.m.
