Bloom, Carolyn - Westport
Bloom, Carolyn Carolyn Bloom, 75, of Westport CT, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2014 at the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital in CT. She is preceded in death by parents, Sarah "Sally" and Nathan Romanoff, sister Sandra, brother Norman, her beloved husband, David Bloom and in-laws, Esther and Isaac Bloom. Carolyn was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she grew up in Flatbush and attended Midwood High School. Upon graduation, she worked at Columbia Pictures in New York City where she met her future husband, David. After a yearlong courtship, they married and continued to live in Brooklyn. After the birth of their two children, Michael and Rhonda, the family moved to Merrick, Long Island where they resided for nearly ten years. Carolyn raised her children, and became involved in an array of community, charitable and business activities which included running various businesses from her home and becoming the President of the Merrick Chapter of Women's American Ort. This would be the beginning of what would be a fruitful and rewarding career in sales and the foundation for a budding businesswoman. When David was transferred to Northbrook Illinois, Carolyn didn't miss a beat establishing herself within the community. She quickly made friends and landed a job working for a direct mail company close to home so that she could be there for her children. She became Assistant to the Vice President where she began to further develop her fabulous sales talent. Always the exuberant and tenacious personality, Carolyn again successfully created a home and a full life for her family. When David was transferred to Connecticut three years later, they discovered Westport, and knew instantly that this beautiful and special town would become their new home. Moving to Westport in 1976, Carolyn landed a job at a growing company, August West, where she was Vice President of Sales, becoming instrumental in the development of the organization and product line. After thriving at August West, Carolyn moved on to learn the employment agency business where she honed in on her natural sales abilities even further. After working within this industry for a few years and with the encouragement of her husband, she decided it was time to open up her own business. Preceding this new chapter in her business life, Carolyn formed a "Mr. and Mrs." Club at Temple Israel as a way for couples to meet and connect in the community. It was in this social club that Carolyn met Natalie Einson, the woman who would become her business partner and friend of over thirty years. Together they created Success Unlimited, an employment agency in Westport that Natalie continues to run today. In her tenure at Success, Carolyn placed thousands in jobs matching people with careers for their own "success" in life. This was one of her greatest joys. A natural and self-made business woman, Carolyn was passionate, spirited and scrappy, always able to close the deal and make everyone happy while doing so. She ran the business like a family, the only way she knew how in her warm, loving and authentic way. Returning to the area of their youth was a welcomed homecoming, affording Carolyn and David the opportunity to expose their children to the wealth of cultural riches New York City offers. In addition, she and David were faithful members of Connecticut's Yale Repertory Theater, Long Warf Theater and their local Westport Playhouse. Once her business and children had grown, Carolyn and David began annual trips to Europe, embarking on exciting adventures together as a couple and later, including their children. These family excursions were among her most cherished memories. While life was sweet, Carolyn also had her share of hardships. Aging parents and health challenges she and her husband both faced were a constant. After losing her husband of 35 years to cancer and caring for him through a lifelong heart condition, she continued to care for her aging mother-in-law and both of her parents who lived into their 90's. She continued to run her business and take care of everyone she loved never considering it a sacrifice. This was an innate part of who Carolyn was as a loving and caring wife, daughter and mother. When struck with cancer in 2013, she attacked it like all of the obstacles in her life, with courage, strength and resolve. She never gave up and always moved through these difficulties with dignity and grace. Carolyn was a truly beautiful woman, inside and out, who will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Her presence, always huge, will leave a void that cannot be filled. Carolyn is survived by her children, Michael Bloom of Evanston, Illinois, Rhonda Bloom of Westport, CT and her favorite child, Casey, her precious dog and devoted companion for the past thirteen years, as well as a loving circle of family and friends. The charities that were close to Carolyn's' heart are PAWS in Norwalk, Connecticut, the Lupus Research Fund for the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY and The Caring Committee at Temple Israel in Westport CT, Funeral Services were held December 19, 2014 at Temple Israel in Westport.
