Cleveland Columbus Hairston, 93, formerly of Bridgeport, CT, died peacefully at home in Patrick Springs, Virginia, January 25, 2013. Born in Henry County, Virginia, March 18, 1919 to Bertha Gallant Hairston and James Hairston, he was predeceased by his wife, Martha Hall Hairston.
Mr. Hairston, a decorated World War II veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in Germany and the Philippines, received two bronze stars. The retired Textron aircraft painter worked as Bridgeport crossing guard and was formerly head deacon of Ebenezer Gospel Assembly. Survivors include his loving bride of 8 years, Thelma Reynolds Hairston of the home; daughter, Kay Hairston Wells of Bridgeport, CT and sons, Don Thomas of Bassett, VA; Nelson Thomas (Brenda) of Spencer, VA; Samuel Dean Hairston of Eden, NC; James Hairston (Crystal) of Monroe, NC; and Wendell Hairston of Bridgeport, CT; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral service was Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Pentecostal Assembly Building, Carver, VA; full military committal at Eden Gardens Cemetery, Eden, NC.
