Edward East Harrison, 92, died peacefully in his sleep on November 10, 2012 at his home in Aventure, Florida. His wife, Myrna Harrison was at his side. A long time resident of the Bridgeport area, he was the son of Percy C.K. and Edna Morgan Harrison. He graduated from Northfield Mount Herman Academy and attended Hobart College. He enlisted in the air corps during World War II. Ed was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bridgeport.
Ed was a remarkably active man who survived a stroke that left him in a wheel chair, unable to walk or speak, for the past seventeen years. He was a happy person who never lost his sweet disposition and remained his happy, cheerful marvelous self to his last day.
He was the former President and Treasurer of the Coulter and MacKensie Machine Co. which was founded in Bridgeport in 1843 on Water St. He founded the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation in 1967 and served as its Director for many years. He was a member of the Bridgeport Rotary Club, first joining in 1957 and served as club president in 1965 - 1966. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his volunteer and financial contributions to the 100 year old serve club.
Ed was active in volunteer service to many other community organizations and served as a board member or officer of many, including the Action for Bridgeport Community Development, Bridgeport Public Education Fund and the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. In 1997, the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA renamed its renovated building on State Street in his honor.
A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 10:00am at St Paul's Episcopal Church, 66 Old Post Rd., Fairfield, CT. Arrangements have been entrusted to his sister, Eleanor Harrison Smith. His wife Myrna is unable to attend physically but will be there in love and spirit. At Edward's request, his body has been donated to the University of Miami Medical School for medical research.
