Berke, Joseph A.
Joseph A. Berke, age 86, of Stratford, beloved husband of Dorothy Berke for 38 years, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 15, 2014.
Mr. Berke was born in New York, NY to the late Joseph and Louise (Harpauer) Berke. He was a World War II U.S. Navy
veteran and also a U.S. Air Force
veteran of the Korean War
. Mr. Berke was a retired detective for the Town of Stratford Police Department where he had been employed for over 30 years. After his retirement from the Police Department, he worked at Sikorsky Aircraft for 10 years. He attended college while working full-time at Housatonic Community College where he served as president of the student body and then earned a Master's degree in Sociology at Southern Connecticut State University.
Joe was a caring and devoted person and was a wonderful stepfather to his disabled stepdaughter. He was an avid chess player. Mr. Berke was a member for over 55 years of America-St. John Lodge, No. 8.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Craig Berke and his wife, Debbie, of Florida; daughter, Louisea Parziale and her husband, Tom, of Stratford; step-son, Michael Hofbauer of Shelton; step-daughter, Pauline Hofbauer of Shelton; one granddaughter, Brooke Parziale; and two grandsons, Matthew and Zachary Hofbauer.
Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 pm at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford. A celebration of life service will begin at 7:30 pm.
