Joseph Charles Velky, Sr. age 72 of Monroe, CT entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at St. Vincent's Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Joseph was born in Bridgeport, CT on November 9, 1941.
Joe attended St. Stephen's Grammar School in Bridgeport and then graduated from Bullard Haven Technical School in 1959. One month following his graduation, Joe enlisted into the United States Navy where he was stationed in Norfolk, VA, on the USS Harwood (DD-861) serving for four years, extending his time to include the Cuban Missile Crisis. Until recently, Joe continued a relationship with his shipmates traveling to various states for reunion gatherings.
After Joe returned home from the Navy, he began working for Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford. He, along with his father Paul, coached the Black Rock Little League team. Joe also played on several Bridgeport Softball teams and actively played in ping pong and shuffleboard tournaments. Joe was an active member for many years with the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, attending tribal meetings, gatherings, and work details, as well as serving on its Council in the 1960's. Years later, Joe was hired by UPS (United Parcel Service). He retired after being employed for 28 years as a Supervisor in the Tractor Trailer Division. After retirement, Joe and Judy went on many vacations and cruises and enjoyed their time together. Joseph and his wife Judy would have been married 53 years this month and they have resided in Monroe most of that time.
Joe's interests included woodworking and many different sports. He was a huge fan of the Bridgeport Blue Fish Team. Joe loved the outdoors, working in the yard, and truly enjoyed watching his grandkids swim in his pool. Joe was a leader in planning family picnics and gatherings. It was his utmost desire to maintain strong relationships with his entire family through gatherings, picnics, holidays and many celebrations by spending quality time with them. Joe was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Paul Francis and Catherine (Harris) Velky and his sister Pauline (Paulette) Crone-Morange. Joseph is survived by his wife, Judith, and three sons: Joseph C. Velky, Jr. and wife Michele of Southbury, along with their children Michael, Brianna and Joseph, III; son John Velky and wife Kimberley of Granville, MA, along with their children Mathew, Andrew and Rebecca; and son James Velky and wife Randi of Southbury, along with their children James Jr., Alexis and Jordan. Siblings and their spouses include: Betty Kaladish of Huntington; Carol and Larry Bourque of Huntington; Paul and Alice Velky of Woodbury; Chief Richard Velky of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation and wife Kathy of Woodbury; and Linda and Chuck Kilson of Sandy Hook. Joe is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews, 22 great nieces and nephews, 1 great, great niece, an Uncle and several Aunts, along with many cousins. He is also predeceased by 2 nephews and his favorite dog, Taz.
Calling hours will be held at Spadaccino & Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike on Friday, July 25th from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, July 26th from 9 to 11 a.m. A Native American ceremony officiated by Edward Sarabia, a Spiritual Guide from the Tlingit Tribe (Alaska) will be held at 9:30 a.m. followed by a religious service officiated by Father Henry from St. Jude's Church of Monroe at 10 a.m.
Joe's final resting place will be in a mausoleum at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Trumbull. Therefore, the family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be sent to the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation Scholarship Fund, 101 Elizabeth Street, Derby, CT, 06418.
