Joseph Francis Dewhirst, 90, passed away on June 20, 2014 at his home in Fairfield, CT. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Joseph and Kathryn (Lang) Dewhirst. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Florence (Lemanski) Dewhirst, 84; and by his sister, Dorothy Dewhirst, and her partner Ellie Mastroni.
Mr. Dewhirst worked in a family dairy and as a self-employed real estate developer. He was a man of diverse interests, including CB radios (which he built himself), skiing, shooting, golf and tennis. He loved camping, hunting and fishing in the VT woods. He was an accomplished bagpiper. He graduated from Central HS and completed two years at the University of Pennsylvania before enlisting in the U.S. Marines during WW II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action on Okinawa. He was the devoted father of five children: Joseph R. Dewhirst and wife Alyda of Bristol, RI; Diane Dewhirst of Wakefield, MA; Cheryl Naedele and husband Robert of Oxford, CT; Susan Dewhirst and husband Gary Kannegiesser of Avon Lake, Ohio; and Karen Mancuso of Monroe, CT. He was the grandfather of nine and, so far, the great-grandfather of six. The family held a small private service.
