Richard J. Adzima, age 79, of Stratford, beloved husband of Eleanor Kernicky Adzima, passed away peacefully in Bridgeport Hospital with his family by his side on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Dick, a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army
, was born in Bridgeport on June 2, 1934, to the late Alexander J. and Helen Wasco Adzima. He was a 1952 graduate of Warren Harding High School, and received degrees from both Temple and Ohio University. He is the owner of Adzima Funeral Home of Stratford. Dick is a member of the National Funeral Director's Association, Connecticut Funeral Director's Association and Fairfield County Funeral Director's Association. He was a life long member of the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in Bridgeport, where he has been actively involved as Chairman of the Board of Directors of St. John's Cemetery Association, a former church officer, a member of the Fathers and Sons Organization, the Veteran's Group, and St. John's Seniors. Dick was a Charter Member and founder of St. John's Sr. R Club where he served as President and Treasurer, and the New England Chapter of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society. He was also a founding member, and past president of the East Bridgeport Lions Club and in 1987 was honored as a Knight of the Blind by the Lions Club International. Dick was a member of the Stratford Old Timers Athletic Association, and was the 2009 recipient of the John "Jack' Geary Achievement Award. He was also a member of the Fairco Wednesday Night Bowling League for over 40 years. He loved to travel, especially to Anguilla. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events, was an avid gardener and woodworker, and treasured his days spent at his beloved "Cottage" at Lake Blaisdell in New Hampshire. He will be remembered for the loyal and compassionate care that he gave to the community in their time of need, and for the great love he had for his family. In addition to his loving wife of 51 years, he will be greatly missed by his devoted children, Matthew and his wife Mary Ellen, Peter and his wife Shannon, and Christina, his cherished grandchildren Nicholas, Thomas, Kathryn, Alexander, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Daniel, brother Gary Adzima and his wife Carole of Fairfield, sister Alix Semanchik and her husband Don of Stratford, sister-in-law Bernie Ganio and her husband Pete of Danbury, aunt Frances Wasco of Trumbull, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The Adzima family would like to thank his devoted caregiver Nadiya for her kind and loving care. A Requiem Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, February 15th, at 10 a.m. meeting directly in the Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist 364 Mill Hill Ave, Bridgeport. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet his family on Friday from 3-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. A Panachida Service will be at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make donations in Dick's memory to St. John's "R" Club Scholarship Fund, or to St. John's Church.
